A Morning at the Office (1950) is a coldly objective view of the absurdities of a tightly organized hierarchical colonial society. Corentyne Thunder (1941) is a traditionally written novel, but it deals with the spiritual schizophrenia of a protagonist torn between two conflicting loyalties. ![]() In his relatively short life, Mittelholzer published 22 novels, as well as other works. He was the first writer of his generation to emigrate from the West Indies and attempt a career as a serious novelist in England. His works represent the personal struggle between a sense of identification with European culture and a sense of identity as a West Indian. Of mixed Swiss and Creole heritage, Mittelholzer decided at an early age to become a writer. ![]()
